Wiikey Install & Review

Today we will be installing a Wiikey with the Quick Solder / Wire method.
I like this install because it looks very clean, and is easy to remove if you ever choose to.

I’m not going into the details of opening the console search youtube. If you can’t, you shouldn’t be attempting this modification.

--==TooLz==--

  • Wiikey
  • 15w Soldering Iron
  • Small piece of 30 AWG wire
  • .022 Solder
  • Tweezers
  • Soldering Flux
  • Electrical tape

--==InstaLL==--

Apply some flux on the 6 Wiikey pad points. On each pad just add a small bead of solder as shown

Once the drive is exposed apply some flux to each 6 solder points on the DVD drive. On each pad just add a small bead of solder as shown

Take you piece of wire and strip back about a ½ inch.
Dip the wire in sum flux and tin it with some solder (don’t glob it on their)
Hold the wire with the tweezers and position it on “Point 1” on the “DVD-Drive”
Take your soldering iron and solder the wire standing up
Do the same for “Point 2” like shown

Align the chip over the solder points and wires for the 1st 2 points as shown

Then carefully bend the wire back to the solder pad of the Wiikey and solder it down then cut off the excess, (I use some nail clippers as they are easy to use and cut well)

Repeat the last step for “Point 2”

Once you solder these 2 points down the chip will be secure so make sure it stays aligned while getting the 1st two points.

Points 3, 4, 5, & 6 I do in that same order.

I use the same technique except this time you don’t have to solder down to a hole so you can come from the side.

Start again by putting the wire towards the solder bead on the DVD board, and solder it down

Bend the wire back and solder it to the Wiikey pad and cut off the excess.

Repeat over for Points 4, 5, & 6 and you should have something like this

And then finally

Great job you just installed your Wiikey.

--==Testing==--

Place some electrical tape over the Wiikey to prevent any shorts.
Place the Drive back into the wii & connect the 2 cables from the Wii back to the drive. Power up the Wii & put the “Wiikey Setup Disc” in the drive.
Boot the disc up and configure if necessary.
If all is working right, reassemble your Wii, which again, I’m not going into the details of that, if not check over your points.
Best way to check the points, use a multimeter and check the continuity from the Wiikey pad to the leg of the DVD-Drive chipset for the 4 lower points. Put the meter on Ohms, its should read 0 (zero)
For the  power and ground just check to the next point on the trace.

Install 9/10

Functionality 9/10

Price 8/10

Quality 10/10

After playing for a couple hours with a bunch of different disc, everything ran without a glitch.
I tried 7 originals, which I had no doubts would run.
We then tried those same 7 games but their backups. All booted just as well
Some titles included WarioWare, COD, Zelda, & Wii Play.
The “Wiikey Setup Disc” is GC homebrew so you know that works, but again, lets try something else. We tested Snes9x, which jus as expected booted and ran flawlessly.
We also proceeded to test a few GC originals and backups, all ran without a problem.

All together I’m very satisfied with the chip and quality. Although the SD app isn’t finished I don’t see why you would use this method when you can get a GDR drive fairly cheap, much cheaper then a big SD card and the adapter you need for it.
The chip as noted before is a little thick but remember if it was thin, it would feel cheap, look at the XboX180 1.6 rebuild boards, they are garbage and crack with ease, which is why I went with this method to install. Not only does it look clean, but is simple to remove with a soldering iron and about 30 seconds.
We proceeded with a couple more installations, all worked flawlessly without any error.
Overall the chip is great, I would have to agree by saying with its simple install, no extra switch needed, and it booted everything I threw in, it is by far the best chip on the market.

Thank you and I hope you can utilize this tutorial.
