I followed the picture that has the actual layout exactly, except I had to switch leg 2 and 3 (middle one and one farthest away from the board) to get mine to light up (all the time).

I bought a 100-pack of resistors (assorted, I used the 330 and the 10k as specified), one 3mm Red LED, and one transistor (from a 15 pack of NPN transistors) all from radioshack.

ok , but with the resistors, does it matter if it says 5% tolerance?
and for the transistor... what numbers does it say on the back so i know which transistor to use becuase i cant find the 2sc1815 as i was told to use, ive tryed 2 radio shacks and cant find it.....can i just use any other transistor?

I'm not sure what it says. I just used any of the ones from the 15 pack of NPN-type transistors. it was a couple bucks at radioshack.

the resistors are supposed to be 5%

Yes, I do. Usually you place legs 1 and 3 in the circuit and then leg 2 either turns high or low completing, or disconnecting, the circuit. I need to know if the pinout on the 2SC1815 being different from the one I have is going to affect that. and if so, how to fix it.

lay your memory card donw in front of you face down with the contact points facing you. counting from the left the 4th one works for your power (the first in the second set of 3) and the 5th works for the ground (the center point in the middle set of 3)

that's how I did mine anyways and it works like a charm

I still have my lit up all the time cause I never figured out how to wire up the transistor properly.. All I got was a "do you know how transistors work". :\

Maybe i'll try it again some day.

i have a question:
which pin on the transistor should i connect?

the emmiter is to the led (point 2 and 4), that's for sure
but how do you connect the other 2 pins?
base to 1 or 3? collector to 1 or 3?

for the numbering, see attachment

The first time I did this I followed this pic , it didn't work and I thought I killed my memory card . The Collector and Base were switched. After I figured this out I did this and it worked. I have since done this for all my friends, they had to have it after they saw it.

276-2009 - NPN Transistor MPS2222A $0.69
271-1335 - 5pk 10kΩ ¼ watt resistors $0.99
271-1315 - 5pk 330Ω ¼ watt resistors $0.99

And A 3 volt LED of Your Choice, I'm not sure of current limitations.

I used: [I filed it down to a rectangular shape to fit pic ]

276-316 - Blue 2600 MCD intensity, T-1-3/4 (5mm) size LED $4.29

Wavelength: 468mm (typ.), Type: T-1-3/4 (5mm), Lens Color: Clear, Viewing Angle: 30°, If mA: 20 (max.), Vf: 3.7 (volts typ.), Vf: 4.5 (volts max.)
