Ubuntu + samba + PS2

Hi

I am running ubuntu hardy heron on my PC. It comes with samba 3.0.28

on PS2 I am running SMS 2.8 rev 5

This is my SMS.smb file

192.168.73.10
SASCHA-LAPTOP
MYPS2
username
password

when starting network with SMS, i get a "login failed (5)" error message, despite my username and pass being correct (I quadruple checked and re-re-rechecked, no mistakes)

When omitting the username and password, I get to see my PC and am able to see all shares from that PC, but I can not access them (SMS sits and does nothing)

Is there any trick to get it working?

PS: I also tried to set "username" to this: 192.168.73.10sascha
I read about this on here, but it didn't work (same result as not entering a user/pass combo)

any help would be appreciated.

You could also try cutting the name of your PC down to something without so many characters or a - , i'm sure i've read something about long string lengths causing issues on connection..

dunno what your password length is either, i know SMS doesnt like blank passwords, perhaps it is too long or incompatible in some way, try changing it for a "test"

I don't think it's a PC Name issue (13 isn't that long), as I can connect to it using other PCs, my Xbox and also SMS connects, when I haven't specified a user/pass in the SMS.smb file.

My password is in a reasonable length, so that is also not an issue.

I assume still replacing xyz, abc and 123 with my proper replacements and adding the "---" on the top and bottom?

--- marks end and beginning

What I suggest is to put short simple values there do not replace anything.

Change the name of the node to xyz, add a test account abc with password 123 and if I recall correctly there is something about the naming of the share, uppercase or lowercase only?

ok, i tried exactly what you typed, it made SMS freeze when trying to enable the network.

as I said, leaving out the user/pass from my SMS.smb file makes SMS see the PC and the shares but wont let me access them.

putting a user/pass into my SMS.smb file give me "login error (5)" in SMS.

Thats interesting, as I wanted to do exactly the same as you this week.
I wanted to try to play movies with SMS from my Ubuntu box upstairs and had exactly the same problems as you.
I got it working although with Guest Access on the share turned on.
What I did was this:

- Go to System, Administration, Users and Groups and made a smb account, in my case username ps2 and password <type in password>.
My passwd had 6 characters, not sure if you can go higher then 8
- Went to the share I wanted to share, in my case the folder Videos in my homefolder
- Ubuntu came with the option to install Samba, clicked OK
- Clicked on OK to get out of the share screen
- Opened a terminal and typed: sudo smbpasswd -a ps2 <enter>.
- Entered the password as I had given in Users and Groups
- Go to the share again (Videos in my case), had to enable the share again, named the share Videos and marked Guest Access

Edited the SMB.smb as below:
192.168.2.2 (this is the address for my Ubuntu machine, the PS2 for me is 192.168.2.5)
UBUNTU (this is my hostname for my ubuntu machine)
Playstation2 (enter any name for the PS2)
192.168.2.2ps2 (smb user)
<password> (the password you have entered for the smb user)
Videos (this is the name of the share which shows up in SMS)

As mentioned above, first turn off autostart network, save settings, exit sms, start sms again, go to device settings, network settings and change network protocol, then turn on autostart network and start network. In a few seconds you should see another icon at Available media and you can browse your Video folder.
All this costed me 2 nights of trying out things, hope it helps for you too.

Ok. This is the best I can get:

Name:	DSC00020.JPG
Views:	54
Size:	291.5 KB
ID:	14595

This is the result of any of the following configs, unfortunately clicking any of the shares will not do anything:

192.168.73.21 is my ubuntu machine
******** is my password (of course, I censored it)

Code:
192.168.73.21
SASCHA-LAPTOP
MYPS2
192.168.73.21sascha
********
Code:
192.168.73.21
SASCHA-LAPTOP
MYPS2
192.168.73.21sascha
********
320GB
Code:
192.168.73.21
SASCHA-LAPTOP
MYPS2
The following config will give me a "login error (5)"

Code:
192.168.73.21
SASCHA-LAPTOP
MYPS2
sascha
********
EDIT: I also tried to give guest access to one of the share. That didn't work either. selecting that share in SMS will also do nothing. I can not access any shares

Did you also do the sudo smbpasswd -a sascha part?
In Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) you can make a new user (or use the one you log onto the machine).
Then with the sudo smbpasswd -a you can use that user and any password you like, doesnt have to be the same as the user you made before. As long as you use the same smbpasswd in the SMB.smb file. Those have to be the same.
I think that 2nd code is the one you have to use. Also I read somewhere that the hostname can only be 8 characters long. Not sure if this is the case as I havent tried a longer hostname (mine is 6), its worth a try.
I used Radhostclient on Ubuntu first but found it to be unstable, it worked, though SMB is much more convenient. Hopefully you have more luck this time!

yes, of course. Else I would not be able to acces this share via Windows XP from another PC or XBMC on my Xbox using a password. I realy don't know what could be causing this

afaik, Hostname maximum was either 13 or 15 back in my windows days (Windows XP would warn you when using a longer name that older Windows versions will not be able to communicate with your PC)

Also I noticed, that the Hostname I specify in SMS.smb does not even mater. All those configs behaved the same when I set the PC Host part to XYZ or SASCHA as well

while I am thankfull for your input, radhost client is realy not what I want. My goal is/was to get my PS2 integrated with my current structure. SMB is something that can be accessed from many consoles and computers and I would have prefered using it for SMS as well (after all, SMS has this function and other people have gotten it to work)

I also just tried changing my PCs name to "SASCHA", still yields the same results as above. I think i'll just leave it at that. I prefer not to have SMS access shared folder than to run (yet another) deamon in the background.

thanks for your help, everyone.

Are you sure it can handle dash in node name?

Yes, I am pretty sure.

I also tried changing the name of my computer to "SASCHA" only, same result.

What editor are you using to edit the SMS.smb file? I recognized that the SMS.smb file I've edited with Gedit looked a bit different in Microsofts Notepad. Maybe the CR signs aren't recognized by SMS so that the SMS.smb file is missinterpreted.

I tried with gedit, wine notepad and ulaunchelf's text editor.

But i'll just stop this now. It's obviously not working (for whatever reason).

i'm not using ubuntu, just some linux ditribution that is in my nas device..

maybe i should try an older version of sms?
