SMS with Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)?
Has anybody been able to get SMS working with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard?
Just got a new mac, and the only thing that's changed is the IP of my computer, so I've changed SMB.sms.
However, it's still not working. SMS shows a green tick next to the Samba Share name in it's menu, but no share pops up as browsable.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
matt

OK,
I've rechecked (and corrected!) my share name and checked Samba is switched on.
Some progress! I am now getting Login Error (5) in SMS.

Hmm, I never tried to use Leopard with SMS,
I always use Mac as workstation and debian as server...
works fine with debian/ubuntu though...

The more I try this, the more I am sure this is a Leopard bug

Yes, but Wireshark does not work on my new Intel iMac
Maybe I can run it on another computer to check?

Please grep the log for: MethodNotSupported
It seems ps2smb implementation requires a special way to connect?

grep results:
Code:
dsDoDirNodeAuthOnRecordType gave -14091 [eDSAuthMethodNotSupported]
opendirectory_user_auth_and_session_key gave -14091 [eDSAuthMethodNotSupported]
But, I found the very simple solution!
If the IP address of the Mac you are trying to connect to is: 192.168.1.190
And the username of the user whose files are being shared is: foo
You should enter your smb login username as: 192.168.1.190foo
I found this information here: http://technojunkie.org/berniec/ridi...lesharing.html
So login now works!
...but smbd is crashing when SMS tries to access it
SMS displays smb0: and receives the list of shares OK
Upon selecting a shate, SMS displays smb1: and then the Mac restarts smb because of a panic
A moment later, SMS sees the share and you can do the previous two steps all over again
I am not able to see any files in the share.

You seem quiet capable, perhaps it’s simpler to compile samba from source, than to solve Apple’s problems?
After all is probably the best company in the world at crippling *nix...

I am quite technical, happy to have a go at that
Configuring it would likely be beyond me. Any advice appreciated.

Trying to compile Samba:
Code:
Linking bin/smbd
Undefined symbols:
"_updwtmpx", referenced from:
_sys_utmp_update in utmp.o
ld: symbol(s) not found
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bin/smbd] Error 1
I have no idea where to go from here

I have only done that in ubuntu myself...
However I assume you have XCode installed?
and I expect you started with ./configure -?
The usual drill is
Code:
sudo ./configure //with some options found when doing ./configure -?
sudo make
sudo make install
Maybe there is an --enable-darwin option or something in there?

I did ./configure and then make threw the error
Am looking into using a version of Samba from DarwinPorts

I filed a bug report with Apple
I got a version of samba through MacPorts/DarwinPorts, but could not get it running.
I have given up, for now

I have given up on Apple’s server side long time ago, it’s very clumsy.
However Apple’s workstation is better than most alternatives apart from Ubuntu 8, those are real competitors.
