I got an email from Apple about this bug, they say it has been fixed in 10.5.5 but I am yet to try it (I've been away)

That's very promising to hear that they think they've fixed it. However I installed OS X again from fresh, updated to 10.5.5 and I'm still getting all the same error messages again. It's the same version of Samba too, right?

Code:
$ smbstatus -V
Version 3.0.25b-apple

Seems to be.

I'll run the tests and log the same data I did last time. I'll have to do it on an "old" G5 iMac rather than my Intel iMac which I now keep at the office.

OK, tried it today and the Mac OS X samba daemon does not crash.

However, I am still unable to connect. I want to try different settings in the SMS smb.conf file before reporting back to Apple. I have not had time tonight to go through all options - with and without password/workgroup/share name etc.

OK! Finally got it to work for me.

Right now, I am not even using a username and password!

It was important in SMS Network Settings:
protocol: SMB/SIFS
SMB server: check this is what you entered in SMS.smb
operating mode: automatic (important!)

Mac settings in this image

It (SMS) keeps freezing on me. When it doesn't freeze it says there was a login error. Then, I guess, when there isn't a login error it freezes. Anyone know what is wrong?

I did:
Computer IP
Computer Name
Playstation Name
User@computername
Password

Assuming you are running 10.5.5 at least?

Try using no password with the Mac file sharing settings in my previous post.

I have an interesting problem.
I wrote SMS.smb, copied it to the mc, and now when I go to look for the new "Network protocol" option, it doesn't exist. Now, if I look in "Network settings" on the top of the "Device settings" menu, there is an option for "Network protocol", but I cannot change the option and it is set to "ps2dev/host".
Any suggestions?

Which method are you using to boot SMS?

Where is it located on your memory card? Is SMS.smb located in the same place (it should be)?

HI all,

I've got to this thread because I'm having th same login error 5 problem with SMS and Mac (Leopard). I've changed the settings as you did in SMS (protocol and SMB server) but could not understand the Mac settings you posted, did you mean you just activated file sharing with AFP? or SMB? is Web sharing active by chance or is it important? is the computer name in the SMS.smb file "Emily" I guess...

Beside that, I try to do all the changes on the mamory card with an ftp server on the PS2 and a client on the Mac, but I always get the same error 500 or other stuff. Do you know a good and working client for mac (I know I'm being lazy here, forgive me)? or maybe you know if execftp for PS2 is better/worse than uLaunchELF ftp?

Thanks a lot for the help until now.

I use Transmit for FTP. Works a treat with uLaunchELF.

On the Mac use AFP and SMB, but make sure the user Everybody has read settings. That way the PS2 can connect without a password (just 3 lines in the .smb file). Finally, yes my .smb file has Emily as the Mac NetBIOS name.

Web sharing is not needed, but will do no harm.

Thanks for the tip on transmit, now the ftp is a breeze...

The sharing, anyway, still deos not work. I started to think that the router could be a problem but don't think so: it shouldn't block intranet traffic.

I tried a few SMS.smb configuration but always get the login error.

In the File sharing options do you have SMB enabled and "ON" for any of the users? It seems I have everything put up exactly as your config, but having no joy at all: it takes a lot longer to get to the login error (giving me false hopes) but it eventually fails...

I'm happy with the ftp so I can move movies and music to the USB disk and use the PS2 as a NAS, but it really pisses me off getting beaten by technology! :P

I can confirm that SMS 2.8r6 and SMS 2.9 works perfectly with the samba straight out of the box on the Mac and 10.5.5.

When you say "out of the box", which settings are you activating and what does your .smb look like?

Just so people have something to go on. Thanks

1). On the Macintosh:
System Preferences->Sharing
Tick "File Sharing". And add the path you want to share. Make sure that the username/password on the Macintosh are the values that you have specified in the SMS.smb

2). SMS.smb file
192.168.0.2
Macintosh
Playstation2
Username@macintosh
Password
Samba description

Line 1 = IP address
Line 2 = Server Name
Line 3 = Playstation name - arbitary
Line 4 = Username (append @ and Server Name from Line 2
Line 5 = Password
Line 6 = Samba description

The important thing here is that the username has the "@mac" where "mac" is the name of your Macintosh computer. ie. in /etc/hosts

3). SMS 2.9 configuration.
Device Settings->Network Settings
Edit IPCONFIG.DAT using the built in editor to make sure the format is correct. Assign an IP address, Submask and Default Gateway numbers.
Once this is done, restart SMS on the PS2, and make sure you can "ping" your PS2 from another computer. If you have assigned the number 192.168.0.2 type "ping 192.168.0.2" from a shell or command prompt.

Device Settings
Set Network Protocol to SMB/CIFS
Select the desired server from "SMB Server..." (if you have configured more than one server in your SMS.smb file).

I've got mine to "Autostart Network". This should then automatically search for and display your shares on your Macintosh computer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for going to the effort.

The more information we have in this thread the more people we can help.
